October 2018 Meeting

Fourteen members met for a “blind” wine tasting evening on the 2nd October. We were treated to a range of 8 different wines, and were asked to guess the grape variety, country, and year for each wine.

The wines were: (1) a NZ Sauvignon Blanc (Mud House, 2017); (2) a USA Pinot Noir (Noble Vines 667, 2016); (3) a NZ Merlot (Villa Maria, 2017); (4) an Argentinian Bonarda Shiraz (Ramirez De Velazco, 2008); (5) a Spanish Tempranillo (Carlos Bujanda, 2009); (6) a Fer Servadou wine from Marcillac, France (2007); (7) a French Minervois Cabernet Sauvignon (Massamier La Mignarde, 2007); and (8) a sweet Spanish Pedro Ximenez (Gran Barquero).

Barry won the prize for topping the quiz. Many thanks to Francis and Denise for organising the wines, nibbles, and the quiz. Also thanks to Suze and Pete for the raffle. Members agreed that the evening was great value for £5 per head.

We next meet on 6th November for the club’s AGM, which will be combined with a games evening. Rumour has it that the Vintage Trio may be providing some live music.

Our club is an informal one, which enjoys wine, food, and good company. There is only a nominal members’ annual fee, and a very low charge for certain events. Village residents are encouraged to call me if they are interested in sampling a club event, or would like to learn more about the club. Francis Dickinson, Ph 822495

Unfortunately the flamenco dancers got lost on their way from Seville, so Janet and Graham organised some background music. Thanks also to Suze and Pete for providing the quiz, and to Mary and Derek who organised the raffle and very generously donated the prizes.

We next meet on October 2ndwhen Francis will lead a blind tasting. Members are also reminded that the AGM will be on 6thNovember, which we will combine with a games evening.

August 2018 Meeting

On 11th August, a group of about 20 members ventured out of the village to Nutbourne Vineyard for a tour and wine tasting.

We sampled 5 excellent wines, which must have been tasty, as several members purchased bottles to take home.  Members made a small presentation to Keith, who recently stepped down as Chair of the club.  We visited Arundel for afternoon tea on the way back.  Many thanks to Barry for organising the trip, and to Graham for the transport.

July 2018 Meeting

On 3rd July, twenty members and four guests of the Nutfield Wine Club enjoyed their summer party at the lovely venue of the Outwood Cricket Club.

All enjoyed the relaxing summer venue in warm temperatures, and the tasty BBQ food cooked by OCC’s Debbie. Thanks to members for their delicious food contributions, including Sarah’s cheese platter, and Graham and Caroline’s naughty but nice chocolate fountain.

Thanks to Graham and Janet for transport, Maureen for organising the food, and Mary and Derek for the raffle. All enjoyed some live music provided by members Graham, Francis, and guest Colin. Proud Mary was On the Road Again or on a Freight Train under Blue Skies. There were Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain as I’ll never find another you. Unfortunately the band’s 2nd set clashed with the Football World Cup, so members missed out on Flying to the Moon, or 3 Steps to Heaven, etc.

We next meet on August 11th for a vineyard tour and tasting.

June 2018 meeting

At our June meeting, 16 members enjoyed the Wine Club's "Tipplers' Stroll", thanks to the hospitality of our hosts and conducive weather on a delightful early summer evening . Members were treated to an array of tasty treats, and an interesting range of wines to suit most tastes.

Denise and Francis provided savour nibbles in their garden, including several interesting cheeses (Lancashire, Brie, Saint Agur, and Comté), and a range of wines: 2 New Zealand 2009 Merlots from different vineyards, a French Rosé, an Italian Pinot Grigio, and a Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire. The roses and a lovely blue clematis were in full bloom.

Maureen and Chris provided a choice of delicious desserts and strawberries, and a diverse range of wines: a Californian merlot, a French Pinot Noir Rose, and an Australian Chardonnay. Their garden was a delight, as always.

We owe our hosts our sincerest thanks for making such a success of our evening.

May 2018 meeting

22 members plus a guest met for the Club's Nature Ramble. We enjoyed a very pleasant spring evening, with an interesting “mackerel sky”. We gathered at Bower Hill Farm, some being taken on a tour of the wildlife lakes by Guy our host, while others, less able to tackle the terrain, enjoyed the garden and its fine outlook.

For us all, it was a great pleasure to see the rich, green growth of grass and trees, and the colourful wild flowers, especially the bluebells.

Bower Hill Farm is a 42 acre farm set in the rolling landscape of a Greensand Ridge. There is a vast area devoted to the creation and protection of habitats for wildlife, including woodland areas, wildflower meadows, grassland, wildlife corridors, hedgerows, lakes and ponds.

Bower Hill Farm has been owned by Guy Amos since 1983. The lakes and ponds were constructed in 2003/05. Guy is trained in agriculture, and runs a smallholding of cows and sheep and looks after the conservation areas on the farm, under a diversification programme.

As darkness fell, a fish-and-chip supper was much enjoyed in the barn.

Our next meeting will be the Tipplers' Stroll on Tuesday 5th June starting at 7.00, our hosts being the Dickinsons and the Hoskins.

April 2018 meeting

Our April Meeting was’ Quiz Night’. We managed to arrange ourselves into 4 teams and then each team was handed a set of questions by our Question Master, Keith.

The subjects ranged from General Knowledge, Food & Drink and Sport to TV & Film, History/Geography and Nature, not forgetting the Picture Round!

Do you know what Pickles the Dog was famous for?

After much brain-racking (and guessing), the team with the highest score of 30, consisting of Margaret, Sandra, Sarah, Barry and Geoff, were duly rewarded with bottles of wine. A big thank you to Keith and Eileen for organising the questions and also to Suze and Peter, who do a great job organising the raffle.

Our next meeting on the 1st May is a visit to Bower Hill Farm 7pm which includes a Fish & Chip Supper.
